Malcolm “Jerome” Bell has served as an instructor of Aural Musicianship and Music Theory at Houghton College (Houghton, NY) and was appointed as the Director of Choral Activities at Houghton Academy (Houghton, NY). Prior to Jerome’s appointment at Houghton Academy, he served as the director of the Houghton Gospel Choir (Houghton, NY), director of the VisionQuest Community Orchestra and Chorale (Buffalo, NY), assistant director for the Houghton College Choir, assistant director of the Houghton Pops Orchestra, and director of For His Praise Youth Choir (Buffalo, NY). He also has experience in leading instrumental conducting workshops for undergraduate students and area church musicians.
Jerome is also an active composer who juxtaposes musical techniques of the African-American gospel genre with contemporary compositional techniques of the twentieth century. His recently commissioned works include settings for orchestra, wind ensemble, string quartet, double piano, choir, and percussion trio. As a music theorist, Jerome is interested in utilizing Schenkerian Theory in the context of melodic expectation and function within Black American music – such as black gospel and Hip-Hop.
Jerome is pursuing a Doctorate of Philosophy in music theory from the Eastman School of Music (Rochester, NY). He holds a Bachelor of Music in composition and a Master of Music in composition and conducting from the Greatbatch School of Music, Houghton College.
